On Africa’s North Atlantic coast is the region of Western Sahara, occupied by Morocco but officially listed as Africa’s last colony. While a bitter guerrilla war, a celebrated ceasefire, and decades of international wrangling have failed to settle the territorial claims of Western Sahara, one group of people is determined to do something now - before it’s too late - rather than wait for diplomatic solutions. Landmine action is committed to mapping, identifying and removing the estimated 7 million mines and thousands of unexploded munitions that litter Western Sahara. Western Sahara has been documenting the massive operation since its initiation in February of 2006. The film will examine the mammoth task of clearing the region’s 2500km border wall, and will examine the challenges facing Landmine Action’s mission when a political solution to the future of the Sahrawi, the original inhabitants of Western Sahara now mostly living in refugee camps in Algeria, is still elusive. The film follows the Landmine Action team as they endure not only the challenges of working in one of the world’s most hostile environments, but also the Algerian and Moroccan authorities who seem determined to obstruct the operation. With Aslan Mintaev, formerly of the Chechen military, Zlatko Gegic a veteran of the Bosnian war, and local Sahrawi Ahmed Sidiali, the team have the essential combination of experience and determination needed to succeed before the landmines claim yet another innocent victim. Western Sahara began filming in february 2006 and will continue into early 2008.
